
FRP grating walkway is a high-performance composite grating structure widely used in chemical, petroleum, electric power, environmental protection, and other industries, especially in environments requiring light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and durability. It is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic. It has a high load carrying capacity and corrosion resistance, so it is often used on the ground, in platforms, passageways, walking paths, and other facilities.FRP grates’ strength and load-bearing capacity are affected by their manufacturing materials (choice of resin and glass fiber), structural design, size, thickness, and production process. Load-bearing capacity refers to the maximum load an FRP grille can withstand under a particular safety factor. Generally, the load-bearing capacity of the grille is determined by factors such as its section modulus, material strength, type of resin used, grating thickness, support bars spacing, and force distribution. Here are some general guidelines:
Standard Load Ratings:
- Light Duty: Typically supports up to 1,000 lbs per square foot (psf) for pedestrian traffic.
- Medium Duty: Can handle up to 2,000 lbs psf, suitable for light vehicular traffic or industrial use.
- Heavy Duty: Support up to 5,000 lbs psf or more, designed for heavy industrial or vehicular loads.
Molding grating and pultruded grating structures:
Fiberglass gratings are usually composed of transverse and longitudinal fiberglass beams, and there are two common types of structural forms: molding grating (two-way bearing grating) and pultruded grating (One-way bearing grating).
One direction of the pultruded grating has a high bearing capacity, and the other is relatively weak.
The moulding grating’s bearing capacity in both directions is relatively balanced, making it suitable for bearing loads from multiple directions. This is commonly used in applications such as walking tracks and platforms.
Resin and Glass fiber materials:
The load-bearing capacity of the grille is closely related to the material’s physical characteristics, mainly the resin’s strength and the glass fiber’s distribution and proportion.
- Resin materials: The resin materials of FRP grilles are commonly polyester resin, epoxy resin, and vinyl resin. The mechanical properties of different resins vary greatly, and the tensile strength, bending strength, and compressive strength of epoxy resins are usually higher than those of polyester resins and vinyl resins.
- Glass fiber: Glass fiber is a vital reinforcement material of FRP grilles. It is distributed in the resin through stretching, weaving, and other methods to improve its bearing capacity and impact resistance. The type and arrangement of glass fiber directly affect the grille’s strength performance.
- Ratio of resin to glass fiber: The performance of FRP grilles is also affected by the ratio of resin to glass fiber. Generally, the higher the proportion of glass fibers, the stronger the bearing capacity and rigidity of the grille. However, high fiber content may lead to increased processing difficulties in the production process.
Span and Support Spacing:
The distance between supports (span) significantly impacts the load capacity. Shorter spans increase load capacity, while longer spans reduce it.
Manufacturers provide load tables based on span length and grating type.
Type of Load:
Concentrated Loads: Point loads (e.g., equipment or vehicles) require thicker or reinforced grating.
Uniform Loads: Distributed loads (e.g., pedestrian traffic) are easily supported.
Grating Thickness:
Thicker grating (e.g., 1.5″ or 2″) generally has a higher load capacity than thinner grating (e.g., 1″).
